Bikini Machine, right on target
Bang on time! You have to aim straight and accurately, like in an old duel. Each vigilante who has respect for themselves must “bang” as soon as possible, almost faster than the shadow that sticks to their foot. I think the Bikini Machine understood this. They took 5 years to reveal it. 5 years is a long time but the members of Bikini Machine always had something tickling inside their barrel. With busy schedules they have written, thought, done concerts and even cinema concerts for the Robert Rodriguez film Desperado with dark Antonio Banderas and luscious Salma Hayek. A film that readily embraces the universe of five gringos.
They still managed to make time. “Bang on Time” is the result of 3 years of recording, at the rate of one session per semester. This is an album that has matured by the force of things like a good wine. Maturation and hard work have made 10 songs worthy of many references. We think of Tarantino and spaghetti westerns, dark adventures in the 60s or on the dance floor of a timeless nightclub. These songs are full of blues, groove, punk and rock’n’roll. It is a jam packed cross of influences, thoughtful and catchy, for which one falls in love with from the very first second.
They amuse themselves by saying that “this is the album of maturity.” The group reorganized themselves for this new beginning. Gone are the days of playing haphazardly when everyone changed their instrument in every song. “No more volleyball team,” as Fred, one of the group members laughs. Everyone has a role, everyone knows what they have to do and how to do it. So, it is more condensed, fuller, and stronger. The intro “Stop All Jerk” is possibly a tribute to the first James Bond credits, and other tracks are between garage and the music Motown produced at the time when people wore flowers on their clothes. And all this make sense as Fred said he listened to the album “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse a lot. He also refers to the psychedelic trips of Thee Oh Sees, The Monks and Black Lips.
“Bang bang, he shot me down / Bang bang, I hit the ground …” Nancy Sinatra sang, sexy pin-up lying on a black floor with her blonde perm. “Bang Bang” she repeated. She had us bang on, right in the heart. Which goes to show, the “bang” has always known how to touch us.
