UKNW SOUNDS : Moka Only

Après avoir découvert Grooveman Spot la semaine dernière, nous filons cette semaine au pays du caribou, le Canada.

 

Daniel Denton aka Moka Only est pour beaucoup considéré comme un des pionniers du Hip-Hop canadiens. En effet, il commençait à rapper lorsque Drake, canadien lui aussi, jouait encore aux billes dans la cours de récré. C’est en 1989 qu’il entre dans la sphère rap avec Juice Dub, Degree One et DJ Tee Double et leur groupe Sound Advice. Après avoir enregistré quelques freestyles (concept révolutionnaire au canada en 1992) avec son pote K-Prevail en tant que Splitsphere, et un court séjour à San Diego, il forme avec Mad Child et son acolyte Prevail le groupe Swollen Members.

C’est en 1995 qu’il lance sa carrière solo avec son premier album Upcoast Relix, où l’on peut retrouver le son qui suit :

 

 

Il se fait rapidement une réputation en s’auto-produisant et en vendant ses cassettes dans la rue. Il avait de l’originalité dans ses instus, dans son approche freestyle, mais aussi dans ses textes traitant de sujets terre-à-terre allant du hip hop à la mode, de la nourriture aux voyages ou bien encore de l’amour au sexe. Et la machine se mit en route, pas moins d’une cinquantaine d’albums à son actif depuis le groupe de ses débuts, aussi bien en solo qu’en collaboration avec d’autres artistes.

Mais Moka Only fait un truc insupportable. Il a la fâcheuse habitude de sortir des albums sous d’autres pseudos tels que Ron Contour, Moka (O), Flow Torch et The Durable Mammal entre autres… Exemple avec ce petit bijou sortit tout droit de Saffron (2010) :

 

 

Si l’on devait sortir un album de la carrière de Moka, il y en aurait un qui pour moi ferait la différence. En 2011, notre chevelu canadien et Chief, producteur suisse hyper talentueux, nous dévoile Crickets ! Subtile mélange du flow si particulier du rappeur de Vancouver et des prods avant-gardistes du beatmaker helvétique. Tout y passe, du son pour chiller méchamment au bon vieux rap old-school ! Des instrus lourdes aux prods épurées ! Bref tu t’en prends plein la gueule.

 

 

Bref vous l’avez compris, impossible d’arrêter Moka Only dans sa création, la preuve en est, en 2012, il sort 3 album dont Aiport 6, qui n’a pas déçu. Les albums fusent, mais la qualité reste. Même tarif que pour les innombrables cuvées précédentes, un album super bien monté, produit et où le rap ne perd pas de son punch. Seul bémol, la longueur des tracks, (moins de 3min)

You have received your order but the product does not suit you?

How do I return my package from France?

Return shipping from France is free via Mondial Relay.

To return your parcel, it is very simple :

  1. Go to “My account”, in the “My purchases” section,

  2. In the list of your orders, select your order,

  3. If your order is eligible for return, please tick each product you wish to return. If a product has been ordered in several copies, you can indicate the quantity to be returned.

  4. Indicate the reason for the return at the bottom of the order details and click on “Request a return”. You can track your return request in the “Returns” section of the “My purchases” section.

  5. Once your return request has been validated by our team, all you have to do is stick your pre-paid label (provided at the time of delivery) on the package, insert the completed returns form in the parcel and drop it off at a Mondial Relay point.

How can I return my package (International online returns)

International return packages are at the customer’s expense (including cost of shipment by the chosen carrier, customs & duties, taxes, etc.)
