Cars & Trains, mechanical soul
I remember those times when delirium went beyond reason. I remember the water which iced our limbs, of the herbs which whipped our calves, those party days where the alcohol flooded the brain and I remember the cries of supprised joy. I remember the births of some and the deaths of others, yellowed by the sun, the froth of storm, those storms that streak the sky. I remember the essence of sorrow mixed with enthusiasm, when the winds broke free and the people were just quiet and followed the times.
Family and design, a moving cocoon that warps between questions and choices. It is this idea that Tom Filepp develops in the album ” We Are All Fire “, recorded under the name of Cars & Trains . He composed a narration on the fraternal art to make a clever electro aucoustic folk mix which moves through an intimate maze. With the help of several artists from Portland (Future Historians , Ascetic Junkies ) , he tries to explore the cold blooded twisty gaps of his musical psyche. Without rubbing salt in the wound, he delicately weaves his memories and transforms them making it more suitable and easier to listen to. The stars, wind, waves, birds, trees and of course fire include Tom’s words. An elementary shaker who moves along the fine separation of illusion, out of the emotional ordinary.
When some people make it a point of honor to call a spade a spade, others rebell and bypass the principles. Filepp irrigates an incredible style of music in different detatched parts. The jingling of iron and rust ring true, where every detail fits together nicely with precission. He swings his emotions among downtempo beats with a soft acoustic, closely followed by the intrusion of strings, brass and electronic noises.
While my feet figet with impatience, I frown and think of the worst. The music is underway and I hear ” Steep Hills of Vicodin Tears ” which is playing and can’t help but feel that the morning light is being shined into my eyes to blind me. So while the stars amuse themselves, I will search for what is wrong in the confines of my speech.
