Meeting with the nasty Gnot Guedin

The Guedin Brothers leave nobody indifferent! Either you love them or you hate them…I am part of the 1st category…I think I always loved the nasty-salacious-pervert-filthy humor; wich is the specialty of Gnot and Dav!

In order to present you their nasty world, I just went down the street to have a talk with one of the bros.

Hi Gnot !

First of all, where the hell does you name come from, “Gnot”?

Gnot? It is because of a comic of JC Menu. The comic is calle “Gnognottes”, which in french means something meaningless, not very important. I chose this name when I was student cause I thought that not taking my work to seriously would help me to evolve. My drawings were also pretty little at that time. Moreover it fits the first letter of my real surname and the three first letters of my real name. Later, I searched for the origins of the world, here is what I found:

GNOT: unknown origin. This name was given to a military doctor when he was checking some poor guys standing in underwear. He was asking on of them to show him his dick: “Show me your dick mister….hum…what is written? GNOT? Is that your name?” That is how the dick of GNOT has become a funny story and became a name to refer to all kind of non indentified objects or which utility was contestable.

Haha! I don’t think anyone will ever steal me that name!

Originally called the Couillus Brothers, you are now the Guedin Brothers? Why?

That is wrong! After “Couills Brothers”, which was also the name of our first book published by Dernier Cri, we were called the “Brother Caca Clan”, which was the title of our second book which was talking about the Ku Klux Klan. We invented new rules for them and they could shit only once a year, it was the “Prout Prout Party” (Fart Fart Party). They couldn’t fart anymore during meetings and they venerated a giant piece of shit which was called  “Étron sacré” (Holy Turd). After that, our publisher Pakito, asked us to choosed a name. Dav was already know as “Dav Guedin” and as we are brothers and that I had only 4 letters, it felt natural to choose Gnot Guedin. That is how the Guedin Brothers are born!

How can you explain your taste for the politically and morally incorrect?

I don’t really know. When were children, we were fond of the comic Fluide Glacial ( monthly rench comics magazine), of the stories of Foresters, Édika, Goossens, Tronchet, Binet…or Vuillemin, Dodo & Ben Radis, Tramber & Jano…It might explain why!

Do the nasty japanese comics inspired you?

NastyNastyNasty…We only love Nasty! I read some japanese stuff but I prefer some unusual stuff. I remember some japanese names, my brothers knows some others, but for me it is Shigeru Mizuki, Kazuichi Anawa, Kêiti ôta, Ishiba Daisuke.

What is the nastiest thing you’ve done when you were a child?

I told some other child that being Mongolito (someone with Down’ syndrome) meant being strong and hefty and that big muscled were called cocks. It was the day when my mother, who was a teacher, invited her colleagues because she was leaving the school where she was working. He was as the door, and everytime some arrived, he was showing his arms stretching his muscles and saying “I am a Mongolito!”.  No one said anything. After a moment, he walked though the house and arrived in a room where my dad was changing and he told him “Jojo, you have no cock!”. I got done for that. You can read this story and some others in “Mémoires de Batards 1”, published by Dernier Cri.

Can you promote the meanest of your friends?

Mean? Or who is making mean drawings? It is very different. A lot of authors who are known as “Nasty” are like marshmallows with legs in real life. But if you’re patient you’ll discover their strong personnality. I know a lot of them, they are to me like witnesses of their times.

I think I promote Yann Taillerfer, an author of Dernier Cri that I consider as a big artist. I have to talk about my brother, Dav Guedin et my cousin Craoman that I know and appreciate and they are also nasty. I do not have any better examples and that is family after all! Oh, there is Nadia Valentin also! It is great!!!
