UNKW SOUNDS : David Gabriel Corpse, piano punk
Cape Town, South Africa. Colonial land absorption, post-apartheid and mixed. For 20 years, new sounds have emerged in the newly freed countries. Arty rock, rap-rave, electro, chilled punk are all types included in the era of “Born Free” South Africans. This is an unparalleled blending that is difficult to name, so scattered and bubbling in the way to experiment and to compose a wealth of different sounds from elsewhere.
David Gabriel Corspe is one of those insatiable guys . To give you a picture , he does to punk music what a sculptor does to a piece of wood. He works it , the shape , upside down at his discretion and dismantles all the codes of the genre to present his musical vision. Specifically, the pieces that make up ” Summer Romance “, his first EP , can almost be seen as experimental. Balancing against the beautiful instrumental interludes , he mixes in some punky pop , which is almost dance music and slightly rock’n’roll , with a jazzy piano voice (” Stuck Here in my Room “) This is similar to a modern cabaret line up . A rhythmic shade which is strongly controlled. David Gabriel suprises us with the size of his scenic trails, for the imagination of others. ” When You’re Alone ” would be the perfect soundtrack of the 70 ‘s . Our patriarchs will recognize this .
Whether consciously or not, South Africa has managed to undo all preconceptions by releasing a touching nostalgic and downright authentic sound. Unfortunately it’s too short, this album is a warm romance in slow-motion rocked by the passion of a young artist.
