UNKW SOUNDS : NOIR ANIMAL (France)
Everyone tackles things differently. Some will complain with all of their heart until the end. Some like flirting with loneliness, to retreat to a place without life, while others reach for a sadness more abrupt and cheerful to externalize a theatrical purpose, as if to show that nothing will ever reach them.
The curtain is therefore lifted on Noir Animal. Behind this anxious nickname, Benjamin Nérot from Nantes produces a dislocated overshadowing new wave blues. Behind his needy beggar type display, he has developed a thick sweet phrasing with serious hints of “grand-guignolesque” cabaret. It goes without saying, the identity of his sound would be closer to a “new burlesque” cabaret than a classic Vaudeville musical.
With his first EP ” Pourriture Noble ” he patches together, builds tones borrowed from the blues, bohemian sounds and beatboxes in his spare time. The opening rock track “Barking” perceived by the frenzied rhythm of a sharp revolt, that can already be seen in the music of Marilyn Manson. Closely followed by “Bad Dreams” where Ben plays with his mouth whilst expressing as loud as he can his discontentment. The rock’n’roll touch in “The Doo-Wop” and “The Man Down The Hill” persuades us once again that this madman has more than one trick up his sleeve by selecting the best of the independent influence. Finally, sheepishly and in a classy boho style he gives us “The Things We Let Go Away” and sends us a raspy sensuality, worthy of being a Tarantino or Lynch soundtrack. His unusual world and the almost unprecedented originality of his work appeals unsurprisingly to Bandcamp and the people around him.
Both brilliant and wildly mastered, the music of this hotheaded guy from Nantes travels through our eardrums to adapt to the experimental trend that is breaking the current music scene. To understand Noir Animal further take a look at “Tournée” by Mathieu Amalric, with caffeine and an energy drink handy. Guaranteed vertigo!
